Earwax Removal
Is it hearing loss, or just a build-up of earwax?
A build-up of earwax in the ear canal will significantly affect your hearing. While earwax will usually clear itself, if you are experiencing the symptoms of compacted earwax it is important to see a hearing care professional*, as home remedies can be unsafe, ineffective, and may make the situation worse.
What is Earwax?
Earwax cleans your ears of dead skin and dust. It’s not wax, but a mix of secretions, dust, and skin. It usually comes out by itself when you move your jaw. But hearing aids, hairy ears, and other things can block it, and you may need help.
Symptoms of impacted earwax.
If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, then we recommend that you see us for earwax removal.
- Earache
- Feeling like your ear is blocked.
- Sounds becoming muffled, which may get progressively worse.
- Tinnitus (ringing in your ear)
- Itchy ears, odour, or ear discharge
- Coughing
- If you wear hearing aids, you might hear them whistling or it might feel like they aren’t working properly.

The cause of earwax build-up is people trying to clean their own ears. Inevitably, earwax gets pushed further into the canal and packed against the eardrum. This makes it difficult for your ears to clear it naturally.
So, please don’t push cotton q-tips, pen lids, or bobby pins, into your ears!
Methods of Earwax Extraction
Our highly trained and accredited Earwax Technicians are equipped and trained to use ENT surgical grade microscopes, which can look deep into the ear canal with magnification. Based on what they find, they’ll choose one, or a combination of, the following extraction techniques:
Wax Softeners
If possible, we would recommend that clients use a “softening” agent, such as CleanEar spray, for several days prior to their appointment.
Microsuction
As shown here, our clinics are equipped with a medical grade microsuction machines that allow for the safe and painless removal of most deep and/or stubborn earwax.
Ear Irrigation
This involves flushing away the wax with a stream of water or a saline solution. Our highly trained technicians use a specialised ear irrigation machine.
Mechanical Removal
Mechanical methods are the next step. After softening the wax, our technicians can use tools such as: hand-held syringes, curettes, probes, or forceps to remove particularly stubborn earwax.
